The battleship Willie left was firing on the enemy, but he could do nothing but hope that his landing boat would not fall victim to the German artillery fire. Bullets were ricocheting off the front steel ramp of the landing craft. The cruisers and battlewagons advancing from behind added big caliber fire to damp down the enemy artillery. His blood curdled watching soldiers killed by small arms fire before reaching the shore. Would any of those remaining be alive a few hours from now. He wanted to survive enemy fire, but at the moment, the waves were soldiers’ greatest challenge.
